As “Hamburg’s queen of
avantgarde” (Hamburger Abendblatt Jan. 2010), Frauke Aulbert boasts a vocal
range of four octaves and has specialized in the contemporary vocal performance
having mastered overtone- and undertone-singing, multiphonics and other
timbre-altering techniques, in addition to her formal training in lyrical
singing. As a vocal-sound-researcher she studies, describes and sings many
different genres - including gamelan, jazz, chanson, dhrupad, beatboxing,
höömii – and applies those sounds to her interpretation of contemporary vocal
music.
Improvisation and
(première) performances of pieces specifically written for her voice have led
to performance in festivals all over Europe, such as the Casa Giacinto Scelsi
in Rome, Radio France/Festival Presence, the ZKM, the Internationale Darmstädter Ferienkurse, Warsaw Autumn, Resonant Bodies New York, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Ear Taxi Chicago, Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker, International
Stockhausen-Summerclasses, Hamburger Klangwerktage, aDevantgarde, Klang
Copenhaguen, What’s next Brussels, Berghain and Klangwerkstatt Berlin.
International concert tours have included Brasil, the USA, Australia, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte,
Tunisia, Georgia and Korea.
In 2009 she was
awarded the first prize by the Stockhausen Foundation for her interpretation of
Stockhausen’s INDIANERLIEDER. The music theatre piece ‚Josefine singt’, in
which she developed and played the lead character, was given the international
Music Theatre NOW award in 2012.
Frauke Aulbert has
collaborated with the composers Georges Aperghis, Vinko Globokar, Hans-Joachim
Hespos, Simon Stockhausen, Brigitta Muntendorf, Heera Kim, Michael Maierhof, Geoffroy Drouin and Alexander Schubert. She has been recoding for film ('The Future', Miranda July), CD (Decoder Ensemble, Magic Malik etc.) and radio (Deutschlandradio, RAI, Radio France etc.)
She studied in Kiel,
Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Hamburg (diploma) and has attended masterclasses
with Lauren Newton, Sainkho Namchylak, Michael Vetter, Michiko Hirayama, Linda Wise
and Amelia Cuni. Her dissertation examined “Overtone Singing in Contemporary
Music.”
In 2012 she was
awarded a one month residency in Rome by the Goethe-Institute and received a
grant from the Culture Secretary of Germany providing for a six month residency
in the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris. Her work and her concerts are
supported a.o. by the Ministery of Culture of Germany, IMPULS New Musik, the
Stockhausen Foundation, Feldtmann kulturell, the Deutsche Auswärtige Amt, the
Hamburger Kulturbehörde and the Foundation Katharina und Gerhard Hoffmann.
